Conference of Directors of National Libraries

CDNL is a global independent association of national library directors, established to facilitate discussions and enhance understanding and cooperation among national libraries on matters of common interest.

The history of CDNL began with its foundation in 1974, aiming to create a platform for discussions on policies and activities that national libraries could most effectively undertake, in coordination with IFLA’s section for national libraries (now the professional committee).

Directors or executive directors from any country across the globe can join CDNL. Every year, CDNL members gather in person, typically on a Tuesday within the IFLA Congress week. There are also supplementary online sessions. The national library of the host country for the IFLA Congress holds this annual meeting, allowing members to be represented by their deputies if needed.

CDNL is governed by a chairperson and two vice-chairpersons elected by direct voting every four years.

The director of the National Library of Serbia regularly participates in CDNL activities.
