The ABDOS community was founded in 1971 in Munich with the aim of gathering institutions and individuals engaged in acquiring, processing, preserving and providing access to library materials from Eastern, Central and Southeastern Europe, as well as materials about this region.

The community aims to promote the exchange of information and experiences within the library information system, particularly concerning the acquisition and processing of printed and electronic media. Simultaneously, it seeks to foster connections among librarians, documentarists and specialists from this part of Europe.

To achieve these goals, the community hosts annual conferences and publishes the proceedings afterwards. The community comprises representatives from German, Austrian and Swiss libraries that collect materials from Eastern, Central and Southeastern Europe. It also includes representatives from the most significant cultural institutions in Southeastern Europe and Slavic centres worldwide.

The National Library of Serbia has been a regular participant in the community’s conferences since 2001. The presentations by our representatives at these professional gatherings have been published in the proceedings and are available at the Library.

Since 2018, the National Library of Serbia has had its representative in the ABDOS Board of Directors.
